In the wake of horrific crimes like Sandy Hooks shootings, and the Aurora movie theater shooting and the countless others that have plagued the Nation America is scared and heart broken. the government and the country are frantically trying to find answer and solutions in issues like guns to prevent these unspeakable acts of violence. But even though all these men have had the weapons to achieve their acts, they have had one more characteristic thats sometimes overlooked in common, their unstable minds and serious mental illness. Mental illness with its brutal stigma and awful history seems to be overlooked in the publics eyes when looking at real problems And i believe that mental illness is important in the prevention of these†¦show more content†¦PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder is completely man made it develops with the traumatic event some one has had and grows into the illness which can lead to depression and suicide. This illness could be completely preventa ble by helping the person as soon as they have had their traumatic event. Diagnosing the other issue seems to have been caused by a program formatted to aid the fight against mental illness. DSM or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders had developed a criteria for diagnosing mental illness this all came before the medical and scientific findings we have now were discovered and the criteria now has areas where there arent valid definitions of the disease (NCBI.gov). The DSM and the number one way of diagnosing patients who are believed to have the disorder. The DSM over time has been upgraded but has yet to refined it to match with the current data. And what we are left with then many people we are concluded to be not sick and left to handle themselves accepting that they dont have the illness which in many cases is worse than the person knowing they have the mental illness. Another issue to change in the fight against mental illness is medication given to pati ents. Since many of the medications have not proved to be better to the other brand the pills are prescribed based on side effects (clinical depression.uk).
